Literary Analysis of Harold Krebs from “Soldier’s Home” In Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Soldier’s Home”, Harold Krebs is a young man who returns home to Oklahoma from World War I. Krebs arrives with the second division in the summer of 1919. The citizens were no longer interested in the returning soldiers. Things had gone back to normal and no one wanted to listen to his war.
One's honor drives him to be the best possible person, soldier and leader. By displaying honorable traits, ones subordinates, peers and superiors can look to him to be the shining beacon of morality in any situation. Subordinates are more inclined to obey the commands of an honorable leader than those of one who is morally questionable. Peers and ones superiors are also more inclined to listen.
The title “A Soldier’s Home” brings irony to the setting in the sense that Hemingway portrays the hometown to be the “home” when really it is the war front; Germany, which is the home of the Soldier. The setting brings for the epiphany of Krebs post-war life and how it is affected by his desire of the war era.
The civilians therefore believe that danger is a constant thing in the soldier’s life. On the soldier’s part, most of them view the civilian life as bland and boring. They perceive that most of the civilians have unimportant jobs that contribute to the boring nature of their lives. The major difference between the military and civilian lives is that soldiers are expected to lead disciplined.
In conclusion, both poems present soldier’s experiences of wars in similar ways, but the poets have different ideas about this theme. In my opinion Bayonet Charge is the more effective poem as it tells the reader how soldiers truly experience wars. Hughes cleverly uses language to explain his ideas and creates a realistic view and atmosphere when the poem is read.
